  2. North-east edge of Argyre
  3. Planitia. "Planitia"s are
  4. plains, flat desert regions.
  5. Argyre is about 600 miles
  6. across.

  8. Plains such as this and
  9. Hellas Planitia are "impact
  10. basins". These are the
  11. result of massive strikes
  12. by ancient asteroids
  13. which gouge out billions of
  14. tons of material. The heat
  15. generated by the blast
  16. will melt much of what's left
  17. filling up the basin with
  18. a lake of lava. When it cools,
  19. we have a flat plain.
